HISTORY

Nestled in the heart of the Residential Historic District of Charleston, the Kitchen House is an elegant, pre-Revolutionary War house (circa 1732) that was once home to Dr. Peter Fayssoux, who served as Surgeon General in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The house descended to his daughter, whose sons, the brothers Hamilton Prioleau Bee and Bernard Elliot Bee, grew up to be confederate generals. The latter is most remembered as the man who gave the nickname of "Stonewall" to General Stonewall Jackson.

The original architectural plan of the building was neither that of a Charleston single nor double house, although it is two rooms wide. It was built with exposed exterior corner posts which can still be seen. Corner posts are derived from medieval construction in England. There are only two other houses in South Carolina known to have this style of construction.

The kitchen building has been restored around its four original fireplaces using historic antique materials. This structure accommodates the Bed and Breakfast guests.
